Sexual dysfunction refers to a problem occurring during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity. The sexual response cycle traditionally includes excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Desire and arousal are both part of the excitement phase of the sexual response.
Sexual dysfunction generally is classified into three categories:
- Erection disorders- Inability to achieve or maintain an erection suitable for intercourse
- Pre-mature ejaculation- Inability to control the timing of ejaculation (early or premature ejaculation)
- Beneficial skills like relaxation, meditation, healthy eating and anger management
Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction
The brain plays a key role in triggering the series of physical events that cause an erection, starting with feelings of sexual excitement. A number of things can interfere with sexual feelings and cause or worsen erectile dysfunction. These include:
- Depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions
- Stress
- Relationship problems due to stress, poor communication or other concerns.
